Forum: GratefulDead Subject: dead.net: Rest assured we are listening closely!

I, like many of you, just received the Grateful Dead Bulletin - Issue #1 from dead.net which seems to signal a new direction in marketing of the site, especially pushing the forums.

The love and GRATEFULness for this site has been discussed here many times, which I can only add my whole-hearted agreement, but I am wondering if this push is also an attempt to try to move everything under dead.net and take the tunes as well.

So I wanted to know if anyone has any info regarding the band's/rhino's plans. I know that this is the million dollar question, and possibly only time will tell.

Any info/opinions would be appreciated...

thanks, I knew rhino had the rights but I was unaware of the contract lengths. that is interesting...

And I guess we are looking at SONY or someone owning the rights in ten years when another deal is announced for bigger $$$s based on the same tease that the vault will be released.

So the twelve or so "downloads from the vault" were all pre-rhino? I was starting to like those releases...

The studio re-masters have been mentioned as a Rhino positive but that is a little lean for me, as many have noted on this forum.

My concern is that we wake-up one day and there is an archive with no music. Is there any way to pass that on, or is it more a wait-and-see attitude?

Funny, but I sometimes translate "rest assured we are listening" into "our plans are set and it is full-steam ahead..."

yes downloads from the vault was pre-rhino likewise three from the vault which was done in 1992 and live from the cow palace was done before the moving of the vault.so if you think about it rhino hasn't really done anything but put out the work dave and jeffery done prior to the vault moving and a dan healy mastered back in 1992.

I hope Rhino considers the Grateful Dead as a "viable" (if that is the right word) entertainment entity (that too) and not just a historical oddity or nostalgia driven commodity. Does that make sense? I just don't want, for instance, the "Rhino Hi-Five" or "Greatest Hits of the Dead June '71 - May '72" to be their flagship. Sorry...a little buzzed. Glad Vault 3 was released. Even though it seems not a real popular choice from most (I do) at least something substantial was released.

I finally see why the Rhino that I held in high-regards during the early-mid 90's, when they were representing some fine texas bands and the like, soured into releasing the anthologies and greatest hit sets that you mention.

They became part of warner brothers in 1998. I knew they were bought by someone, but I was hoping that their earlier independence and foresight would remain and was even happy at first hearing of the relationship with the dead.

No more, this might be a long decade.

Neil might even release his vault sooner...

next time, if there is a next time, GD products should go with SUNDAZED... they are what Rhino long ago promised to be but since then fell way short of being.

I was just looking at Sundazed site and it does appear closer to the mark.

Funny, but one of the first albums I saw at Sundazed was The Five Americans - Western Union CD. A good friend of mine Jim Grant played bass for the band, though unfortunately he passed away in 2004.

Five Americans have long been a part of my treasured 60's nuggets collection, their music has given us much pleasure and encouragement -

my warmest wishes and gratitude for the timeless classic rock he helped shape, go out to the friends and family of Jim Grant - .

More than the #3 hit single the Five Americans are best known for - Western Union - the band also had 4 other familiar hits - which makes 5 in all- !

My favorites include the beautiful "Evol - Not Love" and the knock-out rocker, "I See The Light" - wow, they were great, right up there with
We The People, The Standells, The Raiders, Music Machine, Human Beingz, The Remains, The Knickerbockers - the groups that were real, definitely a dimension higher than "garage", sharing positive vibes, mainly these were serious musicians who shouldn't be thought of as frat or punk - or bubble gum.
Far from it.
The proof is in their music which holds up, and yes thankfully
Sundazed is representing them - an honest, tireless archive label.

Sundazed also puts out 180 Gram remastered audiophile quality hi definition 33 & 1/3 LPs.

Bob Dylan's classic Columbia albums are on Sundazed now, on both vinyl 12" records and cds- even the rare mono Blonde on Blonde, and so forth - their catalogs are colorful, a sheer delight, and very well rounded - offering not only rock of the 60s, but other genres such as blues, country, jazz, even power pop of the '70s such as Flamin' Groovies (oops, I just blew my pitch!)

and well, everyone reading this far should stop and go to the Sundazed online site and request a beautiful free catalog in the mail.

Yes, I am glad to see their stuff available and marketed, since it was laying dormant for too long.

This evening I listened to Western Union, I See the Light and Zip Code which I pulled from The Five Americans site (http://www.fiveamericans.com/). Though I will have to find "Evol-Not Love" because I have that tune on my mind as well.

While living in Dallas in the '90s the band played a few times over the years at Jim's local haunt and they were shows I will never forget. And here is to Jim Grant as well, I knew him for the last 14-years of his life and he was a special person to say the very least.

I didn't know about Sundazed and bobby d's lps, that is info that I will spread.

Looking at their great catalog makes me want to go buy a turntable and listen to the sweet sound of vinyl.

Naive question: are any of the dead's albums still being sold on vinyl?

thanks for the reply. I didn't know Five Americans had played in the '90s, that's a bit of alright!

"Naive question: are any of the dead's albums still being sold on vinyl?"

To be fair Rhino has made some great cd box sets and remastered expanded lps on cd, but no vinyl in the last 10 years, so no GD on new vinyl.

I appreciate what they did with the 1st GD lp, expanded original tracks and improved sound.

I think their best GD surprise for me was the "Birth of the Dead", I just love that one track, "Keep Rolling By".

Has anyone besides me played that track and uncontrollably started going into a Fred Astaire frenzy - or at least a shimmy shimmy?

It's what Rhino hasn't done that irks me. In other words, what they've done is 4/5 stars, but they dropped the ball on plenty of things I don't even want to go into.

I am just looking at the Birth of the Dead and it looks like I need to pick-it-up since I love the period; as I sit here and listen to hey little one.

In looking at the lyrics of keep rolling by, I don't believe I have heard it before, but will check it out soon. So that was a traditonal tune that they arranged or was it a dead composition? I see traditional on some sites, but it appears to be in question.

btw: I like the pics...grace was quite the head-turner to say the least...

Keep Rolling By is supposed to be a traditional, but the way the GD play it, I find that hard to believe.

No idea why they didn't keep it in their repitoire, as obviously they spent time working on it.

I got the Slick pic from Gracie's myspace profile.
